Morocco was the united bid’s final rival for the host selection. Morocco received 65 host votes to the 134 cast for the tripartite North American bid.
The podcast Men in Blazers, a longtime, and vehement, critic of FIFA, particularly under former president Sepp Blatter, had this all-caps reaction:
FIFA WE TAKE BACK EVERYTHING WE HAVE EVER SAID ABOUT YOU. LOVE AMERICA

Host countries traditionally receive an automatic bid to the quadrennial global tournament. Of the three freshly anointed 2026 hosts only Mexico made the 32-team field for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, which kicks off Thursday at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.
The U.S.’s previous turn as host came in 1994, when it set a World Cup attendance record that still stands today.
